To gain an energy recharge get some 'mega photons' from shooting mushrooms, and fire them at 'snail riders', or shoot landed space craft. To replenish your shields, fire a 'mega photon' at the green prismic constructions. On higher planets, there are mushrooms which have a green and purple cap, these 'over boost' shields making you invulnerable for a short while. (they also yield 10 mega photons).
