This is especially true of missions with Capital ships. These will fire almost blindly at you. Keep slightly ahead of the regular ships, and fly circles around the capital ships just fast enough to stay ahead of their shots. The ships following you will be running into friendly fire. For small ships (like the Scorpion, and sometimes the Man O' War and the Nightcrawler), this will be enough to destroy them in short order. With the larger ships (like the Conquerer) it won't do much more than wear down the shields. Thus: It is better to save the capital ships for last, so that you can use their firepower in addition to your own to take out the enemy fighters. This is ESPECIALLY TRUE of the final mission. Also, speaking of capital ships, you can fly right up to them (if you do it properly), and blast away to your hearts content with your lasers, and save your missiles for later. This is actually quite simple to do. (This example assumes that the capital ship is pointing up or down, so that the two guns of the capital ship are above and below each other. If the capital ship is horizontal, tilt these instructions by 90 degrees). Fly in a circle around the capital ship, so that the guns follow you. You will notice that one of the two guns will become 'stuck'. When you reach the side opposite to the direction of the stuck gun (so that it is pointing away from you), and the remaining gun is firing horizontally across the screen, fly away from the ship parallel to the shots. When you near the point where the shots disappear, stop, and re-position yourself so that you are as close to them as you can get without getting hit. Be sure to be on the correct side of the shots, so as to line up with the stuck gun (for example, if the stuck gun is the top one, be above the shots. If it is the bottom one, be below the shots). Allign yourself to fly towards the capital ship running parallel to the shots. Move forward until you can just see the ship at the side of the screen. Stop. Fire away until it blows up. Pretty simple, eh? Be careful not to get too far away from the line of shots, or to come too close to the capital ship, the 'stuck' gun can sometimes unstick itself and swing around to shoot at you. There is no safe position when both guns are shooting at you. As far as ship configuration is concerned, I prefer The Rage, with level three shields, armor, and engine. Weapon one should be a level three laser, and the remaining four should be level three guided missiles. You can take out your enemies without ever even seeing them on screen. Four banks of these missiles (30 in each bank for a total of 120) is PLENTY, so fire away. The lasers are more of a precaution. Once you are out of missiles, you are OUT OF MISSILES, and if you have no other weapon, you are screwed. Plus, if the mission entails a capital ship, the lasers come in handy. Some prefer the Sonic Gun (of all the weapons, it does the most damage for the energy consumed), but if you have a level three engine, energy is not a concern. Speaking of Energy, it is a BIG concern if you have a smaller ship that requires a level one engine. Be careful not to use TAB (Turbo Boosters) too much, as it drains energy. Once you are out of energy it's ALL OVER. No shields and no weapons and no turbo boost to get away with. (Actually, the Machine Gun and regular missiles might still work with no energy, I am not sure. But all lasers, the sonic gun, the photon gun, and guided missiles won't work without energy, and I'm fairly sure that regular missiles won't work without energy either). Advancing License levels can take anywhere from four to ten missions (usually around five-six). The key isn't the number of missions you fly, it's how much you get paid for them. Once you've earned 75,000 (or so), you advance to the next level. Fleeing from the incidental battles (you know, the ones you run into on the way to the mission objective) does not seem to have a detrimental effect, HOWEVER, I didn't retreat until I had already reached level one and was working on eliminating the pirates. It is entirely possible that you will be bumped down a level for fleeing these battles before you reach level one. ***Cheating***All right, so most of you skimmed the rest of this file and went right to here. Well, I've got bad news for you. Cheating doesn't really make the game easier, just quicker to complete. It's a money cheat, so you can upgrade to the max as soon as possible. But you still have to run each mission on your own. They will just take less time to beat. Here's what you need: A text editor that can edit BINARY files (I used the EDIT that comes with Windows 95). Here's what you do (Please note the following: I am not responsible if you follow these instructions and your computer blows up and burns down your house. You shouldn't believe everything you read. Just because I *SAY* that this is a cheat doesn't mean it isn't really a very subtle virus I'm having you put on your own hard drive. Not all Netizens are trustworthy. So be very careful! And also, you may want to make copies of your game files, in case something does go horribly wrong.):1) Save a game in Dagger's Rage. 2) Go to DOS (or a DOS prompt, it makes no difference). 3) Switch to the appropriate directory containing your saved game files (for example, type (without quote marks) "cd\dagger" and hit enter). 4) Open the EDIT program ("edit" then enter). 5) Open the game file you want to edit. BE SURE THAT THE BINARY BOX IS CHECKED! 6) Move to column 13 on the first line (you can see which column you are in on the bottom right hand side of the screen (in between Line and Value)). 7) Press DELETE four times (NOT BACKSPACE!) 8) Press 'd' four times (that's it, just the 'd' key, LOWERCASE, don't hold down alt or shift or anything). 9) Save the file, exit, and there you go. When you load that game in Dagger's Rage, you will find yourself with 1,684,300,900 money (which should be enough for anything you might want to buy).
