Anvil of Dawn hints

The following is a quick way to get powerful spells in the beginning of
Anvil of Dawn, even before you enter the Dark Lantern. Try the following:

- In Gryphon Keep (the place where you start) you can get three golden
coins. One you get in a chest in a chamber just north of the passage where
the Laughing Skull of Thunderous Might passes by. The second one you get
in the SE tower, the one you need to insert it in a hole to reach the
mana altar (one of the Sword Thanes will drop it). The third you get from
a Sword Thane in the main chamber (or from the Messenger).

- When you have finished all of Gryphon Keep, talk to Parsafal. He will give
you a bag with three golden coins.

- Now, go North to the Underground City. Enter and go to the SE corner.
There you will find a building which has a teleporter just in front of the
door. Some Unholy Conflagration is going off as well. Turn the pick on the
West (left) side, then the one on the East (right) side. The teleporter
will be gone. Turn the pick close to the door and enter the room. At the
end is an invisible wall. Go through and you will find two chests. One has
the Unholy Conflagration spell in it.

- Now leave the Underground city by the Western exit, heading towards the
Barrier. Just before you enter, turn North. You will meet a man who wants
to trade with you. Buy everything he has. You need 5 coins as he only as
5 items. The last is the Roaring Column of Lightning Wild. This will
really increase your magic levels. He will also give you a soul link
figure, which will come in handy later.

- Now, head back via the Underground city to the Dark Lantern (you may also
explore now the Underground City, but it will spoil some of the story).

- When you have finished the Dark Lantern, enter the Undersea Maze, and head
all the way North. There you will meet the Lady of the Sea. Activate the
soul link figure, and you will have the Vampiric Mist of Innate Weakness
before you have found the soul link figure in the Undersea Maze. The spell
sometimes comes in handy.

That's three powerful spells without having to kill a single enemy to get
them (except in the Dark Lantern).

For those who get tired of rolling rocks, try the following:

- When you have the Roaring Column of Lightning Wild, enter the Underground
City, and kill some of the Quivering Pools, until you get a Blue Tear key.

- Head to the NE corner. There you need to open a door with that key. In
that building, you should find the Trumpet of Earthen Quake. Take it,
leave through the North exit and go to the Elder Tree.

- Finish off the Elder Tree (you may also get the Dragon Amber). You will
find the spells Granite Ward of Tempered Skin and Deadly Spores of Earthen
Rot there.

- Now cross over into Desolation, into the Reed Plain. Then get the Ritual
of Unmaking spell.

- Now head back to the Dark Lantern.

You can unmake objects (like statues), pressure plates, rocks, blocks,
doors, teleporters, pillars and most enemies. If you unmake things like
pillars and pressure plates, they will leave often some (useful) objects
behind. It's costly, and you need a power rating of 6 or more to be able to
cast it, but sometimes it can be very useful, and you can get rid of those
bloody boulders. I do recommend that your character has a power rating of 6
or higher, as I found the Ritual of Unmaking very useful. You can actually
make (expensive) shortcuts.
For example the Fire Mountain. You don't need to find the four iron marks.
Just "unmake" the doors. You need to wait a lot, but while your character is
healing (there is an amulet that makes your character heal his/ her magic
twice as fast), you can do something else (take a break). Or go back to the
Mana altar (as it's nearby), heal up and go for the next door. Four Ivory
Lion keys in the Barrier? Not needed. Either wait or heal,as by the end you
will have lots of those things that you use at the altars. Just use them
then.

I will also give a list of the spells, their cost and where they can be
found.

Spell Cost Place

Iron Fist of Chaos 90 Palace, Dark Lantern
Granite Ward of Tempered Skin 540 Land of Roots
Deadly Spores of Earthen Rot 344 Land of Roots
Dance upon the Stones of Wind 129 Quagmire
Shrouded Gale of Vengeful Winds 98 Palace, Dark Lantern
Ghostly Howl of Mortal Anguish 456 Temple of the Moon
Unholy Conflagration 258 Underground City
Ash and Cinders 168 Palace, Dark Lantern
Fire Haven 308 Underground City
Shackles of Ice 66 Palace, Dark Lantern
Reflections of the Lake 196 Undersea Maze
Vampiric Mist of Innate Weakness 384 Undersea Maze
Fountain of Scorching Vapors 320 Cave near Gorge Keep
Laughing Skull of Thunderous Might 114 Undersea Maze
Roaring Column of Lightning Wild 240 Man near Barrier
Heavenly Mend of Unseen Artisans 68 Gryphon Keep
Blessed Weave of Healing Wounds 78 Palace
Bane's Boiling Blood 114 Gorge Keep
The Strength of Titans 310 Iron Titan
Ritual of Unmaking 600 Reed Plane
The Dark Cloak of Shadow 160 Dark Lantern
Soul Link 306 Iron Titan

I have not included the damage, as this varies a little for each spell ie
the Ghostly Howl of Mortal Anguish does not always do the same amount of
damage. It varies a little.

Get the Ash and Cinders Spell from the Court Magician, as it will raise you
quick in the beginning and will raise you both in weapons and in magic. And,
you don't have to cast it more than once to kill the Sword Thanes. It may
not kill them, but most often it will. You need to cast two Iron Fists in
order to kill them. That way Ash and Cinders is cheaper. It is not of such
use in the Dark Lantern against the Juggernauts and Wyverns, but you will
find the Iron Fist in there, which should clear those out for you easily,
as they are immune to fire.

The plants in the Undersea Maze are poisonous. Just when you stand next to
them, turn towards them and immediately cast the Roaring Column of Lightning
Wild. If you're quick enough, they can't poison you because the Column is
powerful enough to kill them immediately. You have to rest often, but it
will save you from harm. You better put your first level towards Lightning.
Level two of Earth is not enough to kill them with the Iron Fist of Chaos,
and Unholy Conflagration and Ash and Cinders need a little time before they
start hitting the enemy. Laughing Skull may do the job as well, but you'll
find it in that same maze. Give it a try, anyway, as it's almost half as
cheap. You can also use the Shackles of Ice, but it will not increase your
magic levels.
The same works well against all other poisonous enemies, like the
Fungus Man, Earthbile, Lurking Stench and Murk Elemental, although with
these you can also try Ash and Cinders or Unholy Conflagration or Deadly
Spores of Earthen Rot or Fountain of Scorching Vapors. But beware, when you
have cast the spell, the enemies will hit you first. In order to avoid that,
take a step back, then forward immediately. They miss and the spell should
then hit them and you will not be poisoned. If you cannot step back, use the
Column or the Skull or the Fist. You will not need to do so if you get the
Anti-Poison shield in the City of the Dead.

You get the spell Bane's Boiling Blood in Gorge Keep. Since there are lots
of enemies there (Slog Riders and Sword Thanes), I suggest you get it as
soon as possible without killing too many of them. There are two ways to
do this:
1. Enter the Keep and go to the right exit. Then take the first
exit to the left (North). Kill as little enemies as possible until you see
a door. Cast Ritual of Unmaking and go to the right. The spell is in the
coffer that is the furthest to the right.
2. Go the same way to the right and to the north, and then enter the third
room on the right. Kill the Sword Thanes and get the Bronze Skull Key. Go
back, open the door on the left in the no-magic room, then take the first
on the right (you go north) and enter the first room on the left. One of
the Sword Thanes will drop a Copper Sun Key when killed. Now go to the room
with Bane's Boiling Blood as described by method one. I do recommend the
first method because you have to kill fewer enemies without the spell,
making it more fun and you get more magic points.
Bane's Boiling Blood can be put to very good use here because you can cast
it and when the enemy is under its effect, you can walk away and cast it on
another enemy and so on (this will not work for example with Unholy
Conflagration. When you turn away, the spell stops). I once had 12 enemies
under the spell and my magic levels kept increasing while I had to do
nothing. Quite funny, coming to think of it. Anyway, this makes them easy
to kill. I will give two words of warning:
1. The enemies follow you when under the effect, so keep your distance
and make sure they don't surround you.
2. You need at least level 5 of Flesh Magic in order for Bane's Boiling
Blood to kill the enemies.

In Gorge Keep you also have a room where you cannot use your magic. If you
do want to kill the enemies with magic, then this is the way to do it.
Go out of the room and cast the spell Vampiric Mist of Innate Weakness. Now
enter the room and walk randomly around, past the Slog Riders. But make sure
that they do not surround you, or you will have to fight one of them with
your sword. Anyway, as you walk around (use the arrow keys in this case)
and you come past some enemies, they will be hit by the spell, killing them
eventually and giving you precious health points back in return, so that
this can also be considered a method for healing as there are no altars in
that place. Give it a try!
Another method is to stand in the doorway to the room on the right and
every time an enemy faces you or passes by, cast a powerful spell so
that they die at once.

Another funny thing which I found is the following: Cast the spell Vampiric
Mist of Innate Weakness, and then cast Shackles of Ice on an enemy that
faces you. Sometimes (not always) the enemy will be dead immediately. This
also sometimes works by casting the Shackles of Ice first and the Vampiric
Mist of Innate Weakness. It does not always work, and I do not know when it
does and when it does not. If you do, I hope you let me know.

If you want to kill enemies as fast as possible, then cast the Ghostly Howl
of Mortal Anguish. It is the quickest spell and also quite powerful. The
disadvantages are that it is expensive and that some enemies are immune to
it. Choose them well!

If there's anything wrong, or omitted or any other comments, please let me
know.

Journey good,
