Daedalus Encouter Hints

PROBLEM: ABORT: "Call to undefined dynalink."
SOLUTION: Missing *.DLL file. Try reinstalling Quicktime.
If that fails, try copying all the *.DLL files from the D:\QTSETUP
and D:\QTSETUP\BIN directories.
Try copying ALL the files from the D:\QTSETUP and D:\QTSETUP\BIN
directories.

PROBLEM: ABORT: "Out of Subscript" when trying to continue.
SOLUTION: You need to load a game first then continue. Otherwise you will get
this and the game will kick you out. -=JLJ=-

PROBLEM: ABORT: GPF's and reboots
SOLUTION: Turn off screen savers -NK
Try a different video driver. Try using a 256 color driver. -NK
ATI Mach 64 MAY be a problem. Call ATI to get the latest QuickTime
2.0-compatible drivers. -NK
Cirrus Logic 64,000 color drivers might not be compatible -NK & BB&<

Diamond Stealth 64 happened once so far - BB
Trident drivers have problems Too!- FS

PROBLEM: AUDIO: Choppy speech.
SOLUTION: Try adding a "/U" after Smartdrv.exe. This will disable caching for
the CD-ROM.
Also, make sure you're running in 640x480x256 for the best
performance.

PROBLEM: AUDIO: Popping noise using Ensoniq Soundscape
SOLUTION: Advise the customer to download the latest drivers from Ensoniq.
This should cure the problem as the new drivers activate the general
midi and soundblaster drivers upon initialization. FS

PROBLEM: CHEAT: JUMP TO any part of the game
SOLUTION: From the Main Menu select GAME. Hit ALT-F5. Pick JUMP TO and it
will show thumbnails of various scenes in the game. Click on one to
jump to it. -NK

PROBLEM: CHEAT: Skip a puzzle
SOLUTION: Use ALT-SHIFT and the first letter of the puzzle's name. For
example, to skip the Probe Logic Circuit Puzzle by pressing
ALT-SHIFT-P. The exception is the Orbit puzzle- use ALT-SHIFT-I.
The code is different for each puzzle. Norm has a complete listing
and will pass it out soon. -NK

PROBLEM: ERROR: MMPlay Sound: Can't open sound device
SOLUTION: This isn't caused by Daedalus but by a previous sound glitch.
Turning the computer OFF then ON (Reset will not work) should take
care of it. -NK
-Related to Microsoft Sound Mapper driver not being installed. - BB

PROBLEM: ERROR: This application requires QuickTime 2.0 or greater
SOLUTION: Run SETUP.EXE from D:\QTSETUP (that is, from the CD drive) -NK

PROBLEM: LOCKUP: Gets to Main Menu screen and clicking on buttons does
nothing.
SOLUTION: Somehow related to Microsoft Sound Mapper 1.0 is my guess. Try
updating to 2.00? (I think it comes with the SB16. Please find out
which they have.) - BB
Confirmed MS mouse ver 9.01 Doesn't work.
But Logitech 6.24 mouse drivers work!-FS
I've tried MS 9.0 and 8.2, and both work fine. -NK

PROBLEM: LOCKUP: Locks up
SOLUTION: Check to see if the hard drive or CD-ROM are being read. Using
Minimum Install can cause some long waits. -NK

PROBLEM: LOCKUP: Screen goes black
SOLUTION: Might be in a dark area. Try clicking FLOODLIGHT. -NK

PROBLEM: MISC: I can't delete it from my hard drive.
SOLUTION: Some files are marked read-only and some are hidden. Use File
Manager and keep answering YES to the warning. Of course, make sure
they're deleting the right thing... -NK

PROBLEM: MISC: I saved a game, but when I restore it's not there.
SOLUTION: Use the CONTINUE option. In the MAIN MENU click on LOAD and choose
your save file. Click on GAME then CONTINUE. This puts you back
into your game. After that, when they go back to the MAIN MENU
their JUMP TO option will work. -NK

PROBLEM: MISC: Offensive language
SOLUTION: It got the equivalent rating of a PG-13 movie. It's part of the
realism. -NK

PROBLEM: MISC: Zack asks if I want to go to Mizar, but clicking on YES or NO
doesn't work.
SOLUTION: It takes a while to accept your response when using the mouse. Wait
a few seconds and try again. Either response will work. -NK
Hitting Y or N on the keyboard works. -NK

PROBLEM: VIDEO: Any video problems
SOLUTION: I suspect the ATI Mach 64. It doesn't work that well with QuickTime
2.0. Maybe try contacting Apple or ATI about it to check for newer
drivers. -NK
Use "Small Fonts" on your video driver. -NK

PROBLEM: VIDEO: Can it run in full screen?
SOLUTION: Hit SPACEBAR to switch to full screen and back -NK

PROBLEM: VIDEO: Half on top of screen, Half on bottom.
SOLUTION: I got one call on this so far, with a Video 7 board. I suggested
updating the drivers, or obtaining the MicroSoft SVGA drivers. Any
better ideas are welcome! - BB

PROBLEM: VIDEO: It's jumpy in full screen mode
SOLUTION: It's gonna be. It was jumpy on a Pentium with an ATI Mach 64 card.
Don't run in full screen mode (hit SPACEBAR to switch modes). -NK
                               
PROBLEM: VIDEO: It's jumpy.
SOLUTION: Add a /U after SMARTDRV.EXE in AUTOEXEC.BAT. This disables caching
for CD-ROM drives.

PROBLEM: VIDEO: Pallette is messed up.
SOLUTION: Basically there is a problem with the beginning movie when starting
the game in 256 colors. When entering the game in 256 the palette is
incorrect and looks corrupted. If you leave the game and go back in
the problem can not be repeated. If you initially run in thousands
of colors the problem is not there. -NK (from Chris Archer)

PROBLEM: VIDEO: Runs too slowly
SOLUTION: Use 256 or 32,000 color mode -NK
Use Maximum Install (as opposed to minimum install) -NK

PROBLEM: VIDEO: The screen doesn't take up the whole monitor
SOLUTION: Use 640 x 480 mode video -NK

PROBLEM: VIDEO: Too grainy
SOLUTION: Daedalus looks best in 64,000 colors. Use 64k or 32k color mode.-NK

PROBLEM: What do you use IR and UV on your MULTILIGHT control for?
SOLUTION: Nothing. They're just for fun! -NK
