Railroad Tycoon 2 hints

Hint: Buy a little stock in all companies just to be safe during margin calls;
this also gives you leverage to give a competitor that extra little push when
he's teetering on the edge.

Hint: If you can hire a manager who reduces fuel costs, snap him up; you'll
note from the income tab on your company's book that fuel is a major
expenditure if you're using steam.

Hint: Concentrate on mail and passengers early on. In the long run, however,
industries can be more profitable.

Hint: Remember that you're not the only member of your company's management
team. You can hire and fire railroad managers to help your efforts. Go to the
Company Book to see details on your current manager as well as which managers
are available to replace him. Remember that different managers have very
different effects on your company so choose carefully.

Hint: A great way to raise cash quickly is to issue bonds. If you have a good
credit rating (A, AA, or AAA), you can get cash at reasonable interest rates.

Hint: If you can afford it, always upgrade your engines to the fastest
available. Faster trains bring more profits. Keep in mind that, sooner or
later, you need to replace old locomotives anyway.

Hint: You don't necessarily have to connect all your tracks. It may make more
financial sense to keep individual lines separate from each other, depending
on the distance between towns and the objectives of a particular scenario.
Don't connect stretches of track unless there's a profitable reason to do so.

Hint: Remember that empty train cars don't do you much good. By default, trains
don't wait at stations for the cargo to be ready, so hauling empty cars can
waste a lot of time and money. You can avoid this by changing the stoplight
color next to the train from green to either yellow (wait until half full) or
red (wait until completely full).

Hint: Want to save a little money when laying track in forested areas? If
you're going to place track where there are trees, bulldoze the trees first.
Not only is bulldozing trees free (alert the environmentalists!), but when you
place track on bulldozed areas, it costs significantly less than if the trees
were still there.

Hint: In single player mode, when one of your trains sets a speed record, you
have the opportunity to name it. There's also a little-known benefit for these
famed locomotives: passengers will pay more to ride them. Once you have a
famous "named" train, use it to haul passengers between major cities, and
you'll start raking in the cash.

Hint: It's easy to overlook dining cars, since they don't earn money by
themselves. But if you add one of these to a train with three or four
passenger cars, you can almost double the revenue per trip.
